Unraveling the Complex World of Dog Coats with Jennifer Bishop Jenkins

Jennifer Bishop Jenkins, a certified master groomer with a wealth of knowledge on canine coat care

Alex Martin

When it comes to expertise in dog grooming, few can match the experience and passion of Jennifer Bishop Jenkins. With a remarkable four-decade career as a certified master groomer, Jennifer Bishop Jenkins is a name that resonates profoundly within the grooming industry. Her dedication to education, reflected in her master's degree in education and history, has driven her to advocate for a standardized grooming curriculum. Beyond the grooming table, Jennifer's influence as a high school history teacher has helped her bring a necessary pedagogical perspective to the grooming world—a perspective that emphasizes clarity, structure, and the power of shared knowledge.

In the latest episode of The Daily Groomer, I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Jennifer about an issue close to the hearts of pet groomers and dog owners alike: understanding dog coat types. What seemed at the outset to be a granular topic soon unfolded into one of the richest discussions we've had on the show.

The key takeaway from our conversation was the revelation that the incredible diversity within the dog species extends deeply into the realm of coat types—and that this diversity requires a meticulous and specific grooming approach. At the heart of Jennifer's teachings lies the eye-opening categorization of dog coats into 15 distinct types. She illuminated the differences between these types, ranging from short, double, and flat-backed to wire, curly, and corded. Understanding whether a dog has hair or fur—each with its genetic and dermatological differences—is crucial in determining how to groom them and care for their skin.

The significance of Jennifer's innovative 15 coat types program is its promise of standardization in grooming techniques. By identifying whether a dog has hair predetermined to grow to a certain length (fur) or hair with an undetermined length (hair), groomers can better tailor their approach. For instance, hair type dogs like poodles and Yorkies require styling and cutting, unlike their fur type counterparts. This distinct categorization not only enhances grooming practices but also serves as an invaluable educational tool for groomers and dog owners alike.

During our enlightening talk, Jennifer also shared valuable insights on how each coat type responds differently to various products—from moisturizers to emollients—and grooming techniques. Whether it's understanding the intricate grooming needs of combination coats or discerning the right approach for a rustic versus a wavy coat, Jennifer's guidelines serve as a north star for groomers striving for excellence in their craft.

I left our discussion awestruck by the depth of Jennifer's knowledge and her ability to disseminate it in such an approachable manner. Her teachings are not just about grooming; they're about respecting the unique nature of our canine companions and ensuring their well-being through proper care. As I reflect on the many layers of understanding that Jennifer has brought to our industry, I am deeply grateful for the insights she has shared with our listeners.
