Building a Thriving Pet Care Empire: Insights from Sarah Himelstein

Sarah Himelstein, the co-founder of Puptown Lounge

Alex Martin

On the latest episode of The Daily Groomer, I had the pleasure of chatting with Sarah Himelstein, the co-founder of Puptown Lounge - a remarkable pet care facility that's taken Columbus, Ohio by storm. With a professional journey that transitioned from working in their respective fields to joining forces as a family-owned business, Sarah alongside her brother and mom, carved out a niche in the pet care industry starting with just a $25,000 loan. Their initial focus on daycare and boarding soon broadened to include grooming services, resulting in a comprehensive business model that flourishes to this day.

The biggest takeaway from our conversation was Sarah's strategic approach to business growth. Balancing the trifecta of daycare, boarding, and grooming at Puptown Lounge didn't come easily. Sarah emphasized the importance of understanding market demand and the complexities of scaling a service-based business. From embracing the grind of working seven days a week without a paycheck during the salon's early days, to navigating the challenges of expansion, the Himelsteins have weathered the storm with determination and adaptability.

One of the critical factors to Puptown Lounge's success was indeed their aptitude for branding and marketing - elements that weren't initially on their radar. After starting predominantly with word-of-mouth recommendations and simple flyers, a business coach and the addition of Elizabeth Collins, with her social media expertise, catalyzed Puptown Lounge’s branding journey. This pivot, particularly as they prepared to open a second location, was instrumental in helping them to solidify their presence in the competitive pet care market.

Accompanying their marketing strides was the structured training program and a genuine emphasis on staff well-being that Sarah meticulously detailed. The evolution from a bootstrap operation to a sophisticated business model has required external expertise and a hands-on approach to community building within the company. The discussion on grooming expos and the commitment to continued education was a testament to Puptown Lounge's unwavering dedication to excellence and personnel development.

Finding a way to transition from working inside the business to on the business, while truly taking care of your team, is the real takeaway here. Sarah's story is more than just a tale of a booming business; it's a blueprint for sustainable growth, personal well-being, and the power of community within a workplace. I’m incredibly inspired by Sarah Himelstein and the journey of Puptown Lounge, and I hope you are too.
